Turning Pro With Your Potential: Why It’s Time to Stop Treating Your Dreams Like a Hobby

Happy December, beautiful friend! This is the time of year when life gets busy, and we often push our big dreams to January. But in this week’s podcast episode, I’m inviting you to do something different.

Instead of waiting for the “perfect time,” let’s set the stage for your most extraordinary year yet—starting now.

Amateur vs. Pro: What’s Holding You Back?

In this episode, I share a powerful concept I learned from Steven Pressfield’s book Turning Pro: the difference between approaching our dreams as an amateur vs a  pro.

  • Amateurs treat their dreams like hobbies. They dabble, wait for motivation, and chase perfection. They sign up for courses they don’t finish or spend weeks tweaking their website instead of launching it.
  • Pros treat their calling like their job. They show up consistently, build habits, and create systems for success—no matter how “ready” they feel.

Here’s the truth: Transformation doesn’t happen when you’re ready. It happens when you commit to showing up for yourself, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Are You in a Shadow Career?

Sometimes, we dedicate ourselves to what Pressfield calls a shadow career—pouring professional-level effort into something close to, but not quite, our true calling.

For example:

  • Managing someone else’s business while the business you dream of starting  stays safely on the back burner.
  • Teaching others to write while your own book remains just an idea for “someday”.

Shadow careers feel safe, but they keep us from stepping fully into our potential. If you’ve felt that nagging sense of more, this might resonate with you.

But here’s the truth: Your Dreams Are Your Real Work! Your dreams aren’t hobbies. They’re not optional extras you’ll get to when life slows down—they’re your real work.

When you turn pro, everything simplifies. You stop negotiating with your dreams, waiting for perfect conditions, or letting fear hold you back. You stop making excuses about why you don’t have time or why you keep procrastinating. You let go of the stories and the drama—and things become simple and focused.

You show up consistently, even in small ways:

  • Dedicate 30 minutes a day to your true work.
  • Block out time every weekend for your calling.

Here’s my invitation: Tune in to the episode and don’t wait for January or the “perfect” moment. Take one pro step today. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it, tag me with your biggest takeaway, and sign up for the Vision Board Workshop.
